Historical to current:
LPCMP is headquartered in Durango, Colorado and formed in May of 2011. LPCMP members are local men and women who have served as volunteers in similar capacities over the past several decades, and were encouraged by local agencies to create a "local and home grown" organization. The "Mounties" primary mission in La Plata County is to assist with search & rescue operations, local emergencies, public assistance and crowd control as directed by the La Plata County Sheriff, Chief of the Durango Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Town of Bayfield Marshal and the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management.
LPCMP endeavors to continue the traditional images of the "Old West" with the uniform they wear and the horses they ride. From their "cowboy hat", tan shirt and badge, blue denim "jeans" down to their western boots, a Mountie is easily identified in a crowd of people. On a lighter note, Mounties are sometimes dressed in "period attire" and make appearances at special functions held in the area. Some of those events have included Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's "True West Railfest", True West rodes held in Durango, the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering and correspomding Motorless Parade and other "western flavored" happenings and events.
To meet the needs and challenges we face in our community, LPCMP along with horses, have incorporated "modern" equipment and technology such as computers, cell phones, current production radio and communication equipment. GPS units with skilled Mounties, ATV's, OHV's UTV's, helicopter training with Centura Flight for Life, Tri-State CareFlight as well as keeping basic first aid and CPR certifications up to date are always ongoing. Mounties who ski will be found involved with a winter program called Mounties on Skis who assist the Purgatory Pro Patrol at Durango Mountain Resort.
In addition, LPCMP Mounties have and continue to provide a "Color Guard" team for organizations and various events that happen each year in and around La Plata County.
All "Mounties" contribute their time and furnish their own uniforms, horses and other personal equipment. Any monetary donation received from individuals or organizations that utilizes the services of the La Plata County Mounted Patrol, is deposited into the Unit's treasury and used to offset operating expenses and supplements the purchase of equipment needed. The Patrol hosts only one designated yearly fundraiser, which is held each spring at the Bar D Chuckwagon just prior to their season opening date.
